Heartwings Love Notes 292 - Unwrapping The Christmas Present

Heartwings says, “The best Christmas gift is the shining moment of joy that is now.”

I looked at the tinsel on my friend’s tree. Memory images of Christmas trees from long ago sprang to mind. As I decorate our home and our tree, look through recipe books for cherished favorites and open cards from far away friends, experiences from Christmases past bubble up within me. Because there is more of it, the older I get the easier it is to dwell on the past.

Yet when I allow that process to take over my mind I cannot really appreciate the moments through which I am living. When I dwell upon memories, filling my heart and mind with thoughts of the past, I miss the pleasure of the present. Also, even happy memories may carry a tinge of sadness. These can keep me from focusing on the joyous now.

During this season it is not easy to remain present in the moment. Its treasured traditions and tasks are part of what there is to be enjoyed yet to really appreciate them I must keep my attention focused on them. I need to actively participate in the immediacy of whatever I am doing while I am doing it. When I am not able to, I miss out on the best Christmas gift of all.

Each moment of this time now is a bright bulb glistening on my Christmas tree. As I embrace each as it occurs, my heart overflows with joy and with thanks for the gift that is this season. The love and joy of each moment is a reflection of the birth of Love in the hearts of us all. On Christmas morning I open that gift and breathe that moment in with every breath I take.
