Heartwings Love Notes 294 - Is That What You Meant To Say?

Heartwings says, “Sometimes without knowing it, people speak in code instead of saying what they really mean.”

When I was young I had a code ring from a cereal box. With it I could interpret secret messages from the radio program I listened to each day. Deciphering codes was fun for me. Actually, code may be encountered all the time, especially when people are speaking about something that troubles them.

In a recent phone conversation with a friend she told me her mother, after spending quite a bit of money on food and drink for a party, said that she really couldn’t afford to keep helping her out as she had been. This took my friend aback and made her sad. As I reflected on her story it came to me that what her mother really meant yet could not say was, “Oh dear I spent too much money just now and I regret it.”

I shared this with my friend; she agreed. As we concluded our conversation I heard the smile return to her voice. After hanging up I reflected on something my mother often used to say: “Oh, if I had it to do over I would never have married your father or had any children. I’d have been an artist.” As a child I felt she was saying she didn’t want to be my mother. Now I know what she meant was, “It’s difficult being a mother when what I really want to do is be an artist.”

I’m happy to say that once her children grew up she became a very successful artist. A proud woman she couldn’t say how she really felt. Many cannot. Yet if I listen with my heart to the feelings expressed and check out the words with my internal decoder I may be able to discover that they mean something entirely different from what they appear to be saying.

When you take the time to listen carefully, may you hear the coded messages others may not even know they are saying.

Blessings and Best Regards,
