Heartwings Love Notes 888: Summer Staycation or Vacation

Heartwings says, "Staying home and relaxing can present challenges."

Ordinarily Stephen and I plan to travel elsewhere for our wedding anniversary. This July, when we normally would go away, it has been so hot and humid we decided that lingering in the air conditioning of our home was the best course to follow. It was just too hot to enjoy walking around anywhere outdoors or even to be driving, although the air conditioner in our car works well. The humidity added to the heat took my energy away and turned me into a dishrag.

A favorite way we relax and have fun at home is to watch some of the movies Stephen has added to our collection. Always thrifty, he is prone to peruse a site called Second Spin, a wonderful source for second hand DVDs and a good place to find fun movies one might have missed when they were in the theaters. In addition we stocked up on snacks and simple food for meals. All set for the staycation, we began by deciding when we might watch a movie.

It was then that I realized this was a perfect time to catch up on some email correspondence. Then I remembered that I had a bunch of laundry left over from the past spate of rainy days--I use the dryer as little as possible so as not to shrink Stephen's tee shirts or cause clothes to wear out faster. As I listened to my mind I realized that as soon as I thought about sitting down and relaxing my sense of duty rose up and told me I was neglecting things I ought to be doing.

It became clear to me that it was almost more difficult to have a relaxing staycation than to pack up and go where there was nothing I needed to do. This struck me as counterproductive. As I realized this, I reined in my sense of duty, thanked it, and told it I didn't need it right then so please to be quiet and enjoy the movie. Later in the month when some friends invited us for a visit, we packed lightly and departed joyfully to join them. It turned out to be a real vacation. Our kind hostess wouldn't let me do a thing to help and insisted on caring for us as if we were in a five star hotel.

May you enjoy your time off whether you are a home or away.

Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert

P.S. Which do you prefer? Relaxing in the comfort of your home or departing for somewhere you can do things or just relax? A getaway or a home stay? I love it when you share your stories, and I promise to respond soon.
